Michalis Kontos is Professor of Breast and General Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece and the Head of the Breast Unit of the 1st Department of Surgery of this University.

He acquired his Medical Degree from the NKUA and was specialized in General Surgery. He received his PhD in 2005 and was further specialized in the management of breast diseases by working in the Breast Unit of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust from 2005 to 2008. He was then elected a Senior Lecturer of the NKUA.

Professor Kontos has published over 120 scientific papers in international and national medical journals with about 2500 citations. He has contributed in the making of 18 medical books as Editor, Co-Editor, writer or translator. He is an active trainer of the Medical Students of the NKUA as well as the trainee Surgeons in his and other Surgical Departments of the University and other Hospitals. He organizes training hands-on courses, contributes in MsC Programs and supervises PhD students.

He has organized several National Conferences and participated in a large number of scientific meetings as an invited speaker, chairman or coordinator and member of the organizing and scientific committees. He is also member of the National Committee for the sub-specialty of Breast Surgery.

He has been the Vice-President of the Hellenic Society of Breast Surgeons, has campaigned for the breast cancer awareness in Greece and was honored with an award from the Hellenic Society of Women with Breast Cancer for his work.

Professor Kontos is currently actively participating and is the National Coordinator of multinational prospective trials and he has special interest in oncoplastic surgery, breast surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, targeted axillary dissection, management of oligometastatic breast cancer, new technologies and surgical training.
