George Tzovaras, born in Volos in 1964, is married and father of two children.
He qualified as MD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1988) and completed his training in General Surgery at the Department of Surgery, Univesity Hospital of Heraklion (1991-1996). He also completed his MD Thesis at the Medical School of Heraklion, Crete (1996).
After obtaining the formal qualification as General Surgeon according to the National rules, he received additional training in HPB and Colorectal Surgery as Specialist Registrar, initially at Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, UK for 2 years and, consequently, at Flinders Medical Center, Adelaide, Australia for one year.
He holds an academic position at the Department of Surgery of University of Thessaly since 2000, and, from 2016, serves as full Professor of Surgery.
He is the Director of the official Postgraduate Course in Colorectal Surgery (University of Thessaly) since 2017.
He is member of several national and international scientific societies and is the immediate past President of the Hellenic Association for Endoscopic Surgery. He is also the current ESCP National Representative for Greece.
His main clinical interest is gastrointestinal surgery with emphasis to colorectal surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
He has published more than 150 full publications included in Index Medicus (the majority of them as first or last author), with > 5.000 citations and an h-index of 40 (source: Scopus).
